It was probably inevitable. Salmon seasons are shorter these days,
strict limits have been put on bottomfish, ling and halibut, so the folks on
the coast have now organized the first annual Westport-Grayland-Tokeland
Beach Perch Fishing Derby. It is scheduled for May 27 and based at Westport.
Target species for this derby is the red tailed surfperch. They are a
lot of fun to fish for -and one hopes catch - when you are out on the hard
sand beaches. The sport has grown enormously in popularity over the past few
years, and continues to attract more folks to the perch-fishing grounds on
every low tide.
The entry fee to the derby, sponsored by the Westport-Grayland Chamber
of Commerce, is $20, with three-quarters of the money reserved for the prize
list. There are also a number of merchandise prizes that were added to the
prize roster. The official weigh-in station is Angler Charters, across from
float 8 in Westport.
Tickets must be purchased before 9 a.m. on the day of the derby. They
are available at several locations in the beach communities south of Grays
Harbor. You can get a list of those - and rules for the derby by visiting
www.anglercharters.net on the Internet.
One of the best services the Web site offers is a fact sheet on
fishing for red tailed surfperch. It includes a lot of tips for fishing the
perch stocks, baits, hook choices, and other details. It also includes a lot
of safety information that is important to anyone fishing the surf line on
Washington's beaches.
Among the latter are specific details on handling undertow if you fall
in the surf, and on fishing during rough surf conditions.
Red tailed surfperch on the Westport and Grayland beaches average
around 3 pounds, with the state record pegged at 4.03 pounds. The limit is
15 fish per day. As a result, the derby will be judged, for the most part,
on the total weight of the angler's five heaviest fish. A full one-fourth of
the prize money, however, will go to the largest single fish brought into
the weigh-in.
Those without access to the Internet may get further derby details by
calling Angler Charters in Westport at 360-268-1030.
